Roll Top Backpack | Rapha's Commuting Cycling in the City and Riding to Work Water Resistant Urban Cycling Bag that's Highly Visible and Practical (2023)

Modelled on the hard-wearing bags favoured by bike messengers, the Roll Top Backpack is constructed with an abrasion-resistant fabric. The roll down section at the top is secured by a clip with a clever retractable design that keeps it out of the way once the bag is open. The signature Rapha stripe is webbed to provide attachments for lights and locks, while the back section is formed of three EVA panels which articulate to create an ergonomic fit that keeps you cool.

The straps are padded for comfort with reflective tabs which, combined with an entirely reflective bottom panel, vastly improves visibility at night. Inside, a pink lining makes it easier to locate items, with a padded 15” laptop sleeve and a smaller essentials pocket to keep your valuables stowed safely. An exterior pocket midway down the side is the perfect place for your keys. A heavy binding around the base prevents the bag from falling over when you set it down, and a quick-grab handle at the top allows you to make a quick move.

NB – The main fabric is prone to creasing when rolled. This is normal and does not affect the bag.

Rated 4 out of5 byDaily commuter fromWish I’d bought one years agoBeen using this a few weeks now for my 2x10 mile commute. Keeps my laptop and gear secure. I don’t find the lack of a chest strap a problem, I’d happily ride with it all day. Vision is slightly obscured by the roll top when looking over shoulders but I do ride with it high on my back. I like the top handle and the way it stands upright by itself, makes it really practical for work. I find the pockets a bit tight and hard to access when the pack is full (hence a missing star from the rating). Hasn’t had a good soaking yet but I’m confident it’ll cope. The retro-reflective base is a great safety feature. Very pleased, wish I’d bought one years ago.

Rated 3 out of5 byGosia85 fromGood featureBag looks great, good capacity and shape. Great water resistance. However the material it is made of is very easy to scratch and it looks like is constantly dirty or covered in dust. Even when I unpacked it once it was delivered it already had some marks on the cresses that I couldn’t remove. Also, the bag is quite long and as I am only 164cm tall I am struggling to see when turning to check if it’s safe to join the traffic or change the line. Bag is okay, however for the money I have spent I would expect a little bit more.

Rated 3 out of5 byMartinBelcher fromNice styling but a bit too much form over functionNice styling and aesthetics and reasonably comfortable but I have a couple of complaints related to design. First up, the roll top is fine and a standard in many bags like this but if the bag is full, then the weather proofing of the bag is compromised around the roll closure. Obvious answer is to not pack it too full but the bag is not that large, so include a computer and the kinds of things you might take on a commute and it is not as weather proof as one would expect. Making the bag longer to accommodate an extra roll would solve this problem. Second up, the outer zip pocket is really quite small and the zip is not a weather proof one. Double the size of the pocket and put on a weather proof zip for the next iteration. In summary, I'm not sure one can trust the weather proofness of the bag. Obviously a problem. Looks great though.

Rated 4 out of5 byOveo Perdido fromComfortable but sweatyGood for packing everything, the colorful base is great for mid light conditions. Rapha must work on the fabrics or compositions on the back side that is in contact with the body because a lot of of heat is produced and makes you sweat

Rated 3 out of5 byLovro fromGreat bag...low quality buckleQuality of the bag itself is great, it's completely waterproof, ergonomic and good looking. I use it 2-3 times a week for commuting. But after just (less then...) 3 months of usage black color on the buckle started to peel away significantly, maybe from hitting the helmet, but that should not be a problem. Sent a complaint to Rapha team, but they replied "it's a normal wear and tear" :(

Rated 4 out of5 byGordito73 fromStylish with a few remarksI’ve been a happy Rapha customer for over 5 years now. Owned the reflective backpack and loved it. But as I travel for work and take it with me I wanted something more “subtle”. When I saw this one come along I was intrigued. Comfort wise I’ve had backpacks which sit better but it’s ok for my 45-90min commutes on a race bike. Volume is good but what I underestimated is the top loading aspect. The precious backpack could be fully unzipped so it was easy to neatly place suit, pants or a folder shirt in. Here it’s a bit trickier. But doable. The laptop compartment is fine and also the inner zipped pocket. One thing I’m concerned about is that this backpack is rated as water resistant not water proof so I don’t know how it will handle the nasty wet Dutch winter. Will it soak through? Also, the zip on the outside pocket isn’t rubberized hence place for water to get in. The fabric feel rugged and rubbery so I guess it can withstand a lot but those are my concerns at the moment.Otherwise I love the look, bike messenger style and the reflective pink bottom.

Rated 4 out of5 byADoberman fromRugged commuterDefinitely waterproof (tested) and certainly rugged. The closure is a nice design feature with elastomer strapping. Would only ask for a second side zip at right shoulder for each to have key lashes inside. Perhaps side water bottle carry would be nice as well but I get it, this is more sleek and function for load inside and go.

The Roll Top Backpack is 18.5 x 12.9 x 5.1in. A 15.6in laptop may fit, though we recommend measuring its dimensions first.
